Develop your soloing skills

Jam Sessions Volume One spotlights the two most dominant scales of contemporary music. Jam Sessions features fresh and varied tracks to help you develop your soloing skills. In volume one, the Blues and Pentatonic sounds are demonstrated with different tempos, feels and keys.

A sample of the Jam Sessions program is presented here: the B Blues

Sample Lesson: B Blues

To try out this sample lesson, you must first familiarize yourself with the notes in the B blues scale. The notes are B, D, E, F# and A. The scale below is presented in one octave, but you should extend the scale through as many octaves as possible. Practice the scale both ascending and descending.

Next, listen to the background track and improvise your own solo. If you've never improvised before and don't know where to begin, start by playing through the scale, keeping the notes in order while playing against the track.

When you're comfortable with the sound of the scale against the track, you can begin to experiment. Hold some of the notes longer while making others shorter. Change up the order of the notes. Vary your speed. Remember to stress chord tones; that is, begin, end, sustain and accent the notes in the chords.
