With
about 120 students at their Broomall
and Drexel Hill studios, Silver
Music Studios is celebrating their
10 years in the business.
In
1994, Silver started teaching before
opening his first studio two years
later in Newtown Square (which
later moved to Broomall). The second
location in Drexel Hill opened
in 1998.
A
native of the Overbrook Park section
of West Philadelphia, Silver went
to West Chester University to study
classical guitar performance, before
moving to Temple University for
communication. Within a year, Silver
started teaching part-time.
In
addition to Silver, eight other
instructors teach private guitar,
bass and piano lessons to students
who range in age from eight to
55.
Studio
hours are 3 p.m. to 10 p.m., with
lessons costing $20 per half hour
or $35 per hour.
In
addition to teaching, Silver and
his wife Christine are members
of the band Myriad.
"My
wife sings and plays percussion
and saxophone. I play guitar and
sing lead and backup vocals," says
Silver of Malvern.
Silver
is also a member of the bands:
Horizon, playing popular favorites;
Adagio, a classical guitar and
flute duo for elegant or intimate
occasions and 94 Strings, which
features jazz guitar and piano.
His
very first band right out of high
school was a cover band called
Whatsinaname.
Silver
says he didn't even realize that
it was his 10 year teaching anniversary,
until he noticed one of his first
students had just turned 16-years-old.
The
studio had their first recital
last month to celebrate the 10
year anniversary and also mark
having over 100 students.
For
Silver, who says one of his guitar
inspirations is his former teacher
Chuck Anderson, teaching has been
satisfying.
"It's
been rewarding. You can really
establish a rapport with the students," says
Silver.
